About Us

All tutors are current students or alumni in the MA program at TC Japan. They are trained in both theory and practices of peer tutoring. Additionally, since they themselves are students or former students, they will have special insight into assignments and teacher expectations.

TC offers a non-credit course for the purpose of studying writing center theory and practices. If you are interested, please email TCjapanwritingcenter@gmail.com for more information.

Management Team
Sandra Gillespie, Director Sandra Gillespie has a BA in English Literature and Drama from the University of Toronto, a Master of Education in Administration and Policy Studies from McGill University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Toronto. She currently works as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Informatics at Aoyama University. She previously taught at the International Christian University (ICU), Waseda University, and the University of Aizu. At Teachers College, Columbia University she has acted as the MA Project Editor, and currently teaches three courses: (1) Research & Independent Study - The MA Project (2) Specialized Practicum: Teaching Writing (3) Writing Center: Theory and Practice. In addition to editing and teaching, she is the founder and director of the TC Japan Writing Center.

Gregory P. Glasgow, Manager Gregory Paul Glasgow is a PhD student in Educational Linguistics in the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland, Australia. He received his MA in TESOL at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is currently serving as Head Coordinator for the English program at Tokai Fuzoku Takanawadai Senior High School, and is conducting a weekly thesis preparation seminar for 4th-year English majors at the University of the Sacred Heart. Greg is a co-founder of the TC Japan Writing Center and is one of its current managers and senior tutors, and also teaches an academic writing course at TC Japan. His research and teaching interests are the impact of language education policy on the collaborative teaching practices of native and non-native speaking teachers of English, language of instruction issues in team-teaching, and English for Academic Purposes, with a focus on the study skills of undergraduate and postgraduate students in higher education.

Jennie Roloff, Manager Jennie Roloff received her B.A. in International Affairs, concentrating in East Asian Studies at the The George Washington University and her MA in TESOL at Teachers College Columbia University, Japan campus. She is a co-founder and Manager of the TC Japan Writing Center. She is a lecturer in the English Language Institute at Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba Prefecture. Her current teaching and research interests include writing, writing centers, vocabulary, learner motivation, second language assessment, and materials development.

Tutors
Kazuko Unosawa Kazuko Unosawa received her BA in Liberal Arts from International Christian University, an MA in TESOL from Teachers College Columbia University, and an MA in Latin American Studies from Tsukuba University. She has taught an academic and creative writing course at Tokyo Metropolitan University, and courses in the Communication English Program at Shukutoku University. She served as program coordinator of the English Program for Returnee Children at Japan Overseas Educational Services. Her current teaching and research interests include issues in academic and creative writing, such as consciousness-raising strategies of structure, style and genre as well as peer evaluation. Other interests center around cross-cultural studies, such as cross-cultural pragmatics, contrastive analysis of humor and methods in intercultural education. Drawing on her experience as a painter and EFL teacher, she integrates art and language tasks.

Mariko Fujita Mariko Fujita holds a BA in English Language and Studies from Sophia University, an MA in TESOL from Teachers College Columbia University, and an EdD in TESOL from Temple University. She is a full-time teacher at Keio Shonan Fujisawa High School and also teaches TESOL at Keio University and English at Keio Girls' High School as a lecturer. Her research interests include bilingualism and teacher training.

Chris Hale Chris Hale received his MA in TESOL from Teachers College, Tokyo and his Ed.M in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, New York. He is currently teaching in the English Language Program at International Christian University in Tokyo. He founded the on-line academic journal AccentsAsia.org with fellow TC Tokyo alumni as a way to demonstrate to the world the incredible research being conducted by TC Tokyo students. His research interests include conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, self-access language learning and group dynamics in autonomous group and pair-work activities.

Robert Moreau Robert Moreau is a current student in the MA in TESOL program at Teachers College Columbia University. He has more then 12 years of experience teaching English as a foreign language to Japanese students in a variety of contexts. He is currently teaching children, adults, and business classes. His research interests include writing, learner autonomy, immediacy in the classroom, and pronunciation.

Peter Cassidy After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Carleton University in 1990, Peter entered the field of child-care education. He currently teaches pre-kindergarten with Mitsui Gardens International Preschool. He has completed a Master of Arts degree (TESOL) through Columbia University Teachers College (Tokyo & NY), and was one of the founding members of the ever-evolving Tokyo campus Writing Center. Peter's current research has as its focus the benefits of respecting mother tongue (L1) in L2 learning environments. His thesis paper on "Language Revitalization" touches on the importance of respecting all languages regardless of their perceived importance in a "globalized" world.

Dawn "Jin" Sook Lucovich Dawn "Jin" Sook Lucovich is a current M.A. student at Teachers College Columbia University. She received her B.A. in Rhetoric/Creative Writing from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her areas of interest include EFL in East Asia, EFL composition, and writing centers in Asia. She is looking forward to working with TC Tokyo students as a Writing Center Tutor.

   

December 2011 / January 2012 Schedule

The Writing Center will be closed between December 24, 2011 and January 2, 2012. Operations will resume on January 7, 2012. Also the TC Community & Alumni Group Meeting will be held at TC on Saturday, Jan. 7th at 1pm.

For 3000 yen we offer private one-on-one tutoring sessions for 60 minutes.
