Peace Education Program

Dear Peace Education Participants:

While it is with some regret that we inform you that this is the last year that the professional development certificate program in peace education will be offered at the Tokyo TC campus, it is with great satisfaction that we view its outcomes. The program started at the Tokyo campus in 2003, and has attracted over 70 students, with 15 completing all of the certificate requirements to date.

The Peace Education Center is grateful for the cooperation of Terry Royce and the staff of TC Tokyo who made it possible for us to begin this important work among our Japanese and Japan-based colleagues. We hope to continue cooperation with TC Tokyo on joint programs with the other institutions, with which we are likely to be working on special events and trainings.

For the students currently working towards completing their certificates the core workshops listed on the schedule page of this website will be offered in 2007 to allow you to do so. We encourage you to use the downloadable registration form to reserve your place as soon as possible. After completing the form, please send it back to me by email at milnermw@tc-japan.edu

These workshops in 2007 are also open to educators not now in the certificate program, who would like to take advantage of this last opportunity to work with Peace Education Center staff as instructors. Registration is possible as a workshop participant at a special price ( Please see the Fees page) and use the same Registration Form to reserve your place in the workshops.

Since each student's situation is slightly different in terms of the workshops that you need to complete the certificate requirements, please feel free to contact Michele Milner milnermw@tc-japan.edu on an individual basis so that I can answer any questions about your situation, and outline the options that are available to you for completing the certificate requirements.

We would also like to inform you of a new development in the Peace Education Center's work in professional development training in Japan. Some of you are already familiar with a new initiative derived from the experience of the international institute on peace education, community-based institutes on peace education (CIPE). CIPE is part of the forthcoming phase in our work in peace education programs and trainings developed specially with the national institutions, cultures and contexts in which they take place. We will do what we can to help other universities and organizations to undertake peace education serving more as consultants than as deliverers of peace education. In Japan, our hope is that some of you who have completed the certificate program will be the agents of delivery to their colleagues and younger educators and students. We look forward to working with some of you on initiating such nationally based professional development trainings.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation and patience in this transitional phase,

Sincerely,
Michele Milner
