COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This global education "materials" workshop is designed to complement the global education "methods" workshop which is offered separately. The "materials" workshop aims to introduce students to global education approaches to materials design as they relate to the teaching of global issues in content-based language classes.

COURSE READINGS:

Course readings will consist of in-class handouts and specialized books in the area of global education that the instructor will make available for book reports and out-of-class reading assignments.

BOOKS TO BUY:

There are no textbooks to buy or reading packs to purchase, instead, students will be doing guided reading and book reports from the materials provided by the professor.

BIO-DATA:

Kip A. Cates is a professor in the Faculty of Regional Sciences at Tottori University and has an MA in Applied Linguistics. He is the coordinator of the "Global Issues" Special Interest Group (GILE SIG) of the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) and publishes a quarterly "Global Issues in Language Education Newsletter." He is a past chair of the "TESOLers for Social Responsibility" (TSR) Caucus, is a global education advisor for the NGO Peace Boat and is founder of the Asian Youth Forum (AYF). He gives workshops and presentations on global education and language teaching both in Japan and overseas.
