Wendy Bowcher, Associate Professor, Tokyo Gakugei University
1 credit for Methodology; 2 Credits for Practicum for Groups 1-16;
3 Credits for practicum for Group 17.
Description:
In the Methods section of this class, we will focus on introducing students to basic theories about conversation, and principles and techniques for teaching the spoken language. We will also examine various topics relating to the design of materials for teaching speaking, and methodological aspects of lesson planning and curriculum design.
The Practicum section will focus on continuing the work begun in the methodology course to allow the students to explore the theory and practice of teaching the speaking skill in ESOL contexts. It will also attempt to develop further, in a practical sense, the insights gained in examining the design of materials for teaching speaking, and to critically assess methodological considerations in lesson planning and curriculum design in each teacher's own teaching contexts.
