Description:

This course will focus on introducing the practice and theory of teaching listening. Participants will identify the role of listening in language learning and examine various techniques designed to teach listening. The participants will analyze and evaluate existing materials, consider ways to modify those materials as well as develop original materials to teach listening. There will be an emphasis on noticing one's own experience and strategies in listening in a foreign/second language.

To pass this course learners are required to:

  1. Attend and participate in all the classes.
  2. Present and participate in peer teaching.
  3. Conduct a major presentation at the end of the course.
  4. Participate in observations by trainees and instructor

ASSESSMENT:

Assessment will be based on the assignments and classroom participation.

Marc Helgesen is Professor in the Dept. of Intercultural Studies, Miyagi Gakuin, Sendai. He is particularly interested in materials design and is an author of the Active Listening series (Cambridge), English Firsthand, Impact and Workplace English. He has been teaching in Japan since 1982 and has taught at many levels including university, junior and senior high, senmon gakko and adults.
