In the methodology component of the course, students will cover key aspects of global education such as definitions, a history of the field, objectives and rationale as well as studying the related fields of peace education, human rights education, environmental education and development education. Participants will study teaching ideas, techniques and materials from these disciplines and then explore how these can be integrated into a communicative content-based approach to language teaching.
In the practicum component, students will:
During the course, participants will have a chance to examine global education teaching resources, do in-depth reading in the field, and experiment with global education approaches to curriculum design, methodology and evaluation. They will also have a chance to experience global education teaching activities, and to design and teach foreign language lessons which promote global awareness and international understanding. Participants should come away from the course with a deeper understanding of how global education and cooperative learning can be integrated into foreign language teaching and learning.
Assessment for the course will be based on:
Participants are required to write a short essay (2 pages minimum) giving their comments and reactions to the pre-course reading materials. This must be handed in to the instructor at the first course session and will demonstrate that participants have both done the reading and have thoughtfully considered the contents of what they've read.
The course textbook will comprise a reading package prepared by the instructor which will be available for purchase at the TC office.
