1-3 Credits
Letter Grade (Pass/Fail option)

Description:

The purpose of this course is to investigate the broader role of TESOL materials in the sense of viewing all of the various "materials" used in teaching/learning language, including: needs analysis, curriculum development, syllabus design, learning goals and objectives, instructional materials, and assessment. The role of standards in ES/FL will also be addressed in this light. As such, this course will present theory and then seek to apply it to practice, and participants will be asked to identify and/or develop each of these elements for a real-life teaching/learning context. Thus, this course will involve a series of tasks, and participants will develop a portfolio of analyses, reflections, and teaching/learning materials for actual use. Along with the broader issues involved in this topic, this course will also seek to address the specific issues related to the "materials" involved in teaching English in Japan.

Pre-course Assignment:

Please read Chapters 1 & 2 in the required textbook (see above) before the first day of class.
