Description:

This course provides students with a basic knowledge of the sound systems of English and Japanese with particular reference to the problems of learning and teaching English pronunciation. The topics include articulatory phonetics, phonological rules, sound-spelling correspondences, a contrastive analysis, the acquisition of second language phonology, and Japanese students' interlanguage English Phonology. Furthermore, students will be trained in how to transcribe speech sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Course Requirements:

a) assigned readings (texts & articles),
b) weekly laboratory work,
c) occasional written homework assignments,
d) mid-term and final exams, and
e) a course project (Phonetic transcription and analysis of a Japanese student's English pronunciation).

Dr. Sekiya holds an M.Ed. and doctorate (Ed.D.) from Columbia University Teachers College (New York), and is currently a full Professor at Kanda University of International Studies. His research interests have focussed specifically on the acquisition of English phonology by Japanese L1 speakers, and on general phonological research issues in SLA
