TRANSFERING

TOKYO TO NEW YORK CAMPUS

Many English teachers in the Japanese educational system are now able to obtain permission to take leave to study abroad. Those who wish to start the M.A. program in Tokyo and then finish their study in the MA in TESOL program in New York may request a transfer from the Tokyo program to the New York program. Those wishing to transfer should submit a change of program application to the Admissions Office in New York. This application is then forwarded for review by the New York TESOL faculty. Please note that permission to transfer between any program in Teachers College is not automatic but subject to approval by the program to which application has been made.

Preparation to transfer should be made in accordance with the New York academic calendar, and by making sure that there is enough time to obtain the relevant English proficiency test scores. Preparation for transfer should therefore be conducted well in advance so the transferee can obtain campus housing and register for courses in time.

Please note the following deadlines for applying for a change of program at TC:

For applicants wishing to transfer to start in the Summer A or B, or Fall or Spring Semesters:

Deadline: before November 1st (in the year before you intend to transfer)

In all cases of transfer, non-native speakers of English must submit with their application:

  • an IELTS score of at least 7.0 or
  • a score of at least 100 on the new TOEFL iBT

The following older TOEFL scores may also be submitted:

  • a minimum score of 600 on the TOEFL (CBT: 250), and
  • a score of 5.0 on the TWE (Test of Written English), and
  • a score of 50 on the TSE (Test of Spoken English) or a SPEAK Test score of 50.

Please note the following information for applying for student housing at TC:

Accommodation in TC Housing should be applied for within the published deadlines. Students who live outside a 50-mile radius of New York City have the highest priority. To be considered for housing, the following application timeline is recommended:

  • For Fall term entry: February 1 January 1
  • For Spring term entry: September 1
  • For Summer A term entry: December 1
  • For Summer B term entry:

Housing applications are separate from applications for admission or transfer to Teachers College.

Applicants for housing are encouraged to apply early even if an admissions decision has not yet been received. Applications for housing may be sent up to one year prior to the semester you plan to enrol and must be accompanied by a $20 non-refundable application fee (cash, money order, or check payable to Teachers College).
