TRANSFERING

NEW YORK TO TOKYO

If a current student in the New York MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics programs wishes to transfer to the Tokyo campus for completing the MA degree or for enrichment (to do a couple of courses only during summer for example), then he or she must in the first instance discuss this with the relevant TESOL or Applied Linguistics department advisor.

In a NY to Tokyo transfer, it is expected though not required that non-native speakers of English would have already submitted:

  • an IELTS score of at least 7.0 or
  • a score of at least 100 on the new TOEFL iBT

The following older TOEFL scores may also be submitted:

  • a minimum score of 600 on the TOEFL (CBT: 250), and
  • a score of 5.0 on the TWE (Test of Written English), and
  • a score of 50 on the TSE (Test of Spoken English).

Preparation to transfer should be made in accordance with the Tokyo academic calendar, and by making sure that there is enough time to obtain accommodation and if required, employment. Preparation for transfer should therefore be conducted well in advance and with full discussion with NY advisors and the Tokyo Director.
